Larkin: Loss and discovery revealed between the brush strokes
Whenever I drop off a book at the Newton Free Library, I try to stop into the gallery to take a look at the paintings on exhibit. In the rush of the day, that space offers such beauty and quiet contemplation. I may never know where the artist “traveled” to arrive at his art, but, for a few minutes, I have the pleasure of going along for the ride.
Art has the ability to transfix and transform us. The creative process is so unique and mysterious, but the “product” is so democratic. We may never understand what Da Vinci was thinking when he painted the Mona Lisa, but we all have the opportunity to see the soul of her.
